As luck would have it – it's another day of extra special celebrations – American Independence Day!!!…. "Happy 4th July" to you all.
We weren't docking until around 11am, so we had plenty of time to hang over the railing of our balcony to search for wildlife, whilst gently cruising up San Francisco Bay. Believe it or not, we spotted a 'whale' and I even managed to catch a glimpse of it for the record.
It was a lovely, sunny sail in, under the Golden Gate Bridge, with great views of the island of Alcatraz – the infamous prison which was home to many gangsters, including Al Capone.
Eager to explore, and after a quick lunch on board, it was off to Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39 (along with half of San Francisco), just a short walk away. It hadn't changed much at all since we were there almost 30 years ago – apart from the crowds. This iconic landmark was buzzing with live entertainment, plenty of food vans, trams and buses whizzing by, lots and lots of very happy families, carousels & rides, crowded restaurants, quirky shops, all on the very attractive waterfront, and the weather too was perfect. Unfortunately, it was not the right time of year for one of the cutest attractions as most of the seals were away doing their thing for the summer, but there were a few lounging around and posing for photos.
Looking for a seat and in need of a good coffee, we went into the museum of the Boudin Sourdough Bakery and watched the bakers mixing and making their delicious breads…. then had a great coffee and the best lemon slice ever.
We spent the rest of the afternoon walking the streets, enjoying all the merriment and returned to the ship for dinner. With a glass, or two of red, we took up residence on our balcony to watch the passing crowds, the daylight disappear and of course, the fireworks - but the fog moved in and it was sadly a little disappointing. Oh well, we can't complain after the recent display in Canada!!…… Another day in San Francisco tomorrow - yippeee!!!
