FRIDAY, 23RD JUNE, 2017 – CRUISING HUBBARD GLACIER, ALASKA

Another crazy night of not being able to sleep, meant a sleep-in for many of us but it didn't matter as we were not 'going ashore' today.  As we've never seen a "glacier" in the raw before, we were not quite sure what to expect.  As we were not due there until around 3pm,  it was all eyes across the water all day, hoping for some wildlife – just one whale will do!!!

It was super smooth cruising when we took on board our park ranger, in Yakutat Bay, who was to give us commentary whilst we approached Hubbard Glacier.  The day was perfect – blue sky, no wind and smooth as silk….

We could see the glacier in the distance but had no idea that our Captain was going to take us so very close to this magnificent spectacle.  It was like a frenzy of wild things taking selfies and photos of each other in the foreground.  The sound of the 'carving', was like the cracking of thunder, and then huge chunks of ice would break off and fall into the water, every now and again and drift by…..  sometimes with some little critters on board.  We were fortunate to spend a couple of hours right there just taking it all in and then as we moved on, it was a beautiful vision with the range of snowy mountains disappearing into the distance…….. no whales today!!

So much fresh air and sunshine today (even got sunburnt – only on the face though as we were very rugged up) made everyone tired and for those not watching the Lions v. All Blacks at 11.30pm, it was a reasonably early night.

Tomorrow we will be cruising "Glacier Bay"…  but the weather doesn't sound too special……  we were very lucky today!!!!
